The P2-02 filter holds a P2 classification in accordance with EN143:2021.

EN143:2021 has three classifications, which describe the minimum filtration efficiencies required against both solid and oil-based particulates (tested via NaCl salt and paraffin oil challenges, respectively):

• P1 is >80%
• P2 is >94%
• P3 is >99.95%

However, the P2-02 performs well above the 94% threshold; it tests ≥99% filtration efficiency against solid particulate for both single and multiple shift use. The P2-02 also demonstrates >97% efficiency for oil-based particulates and a >95% efficiency when tested for multiple-shift use.

There are three metrics which can be used to compare the original TR2 filter and the CE-Certified P2-02 filter: particulate types, efficiency, breathability.

Particulate Types

The original TR2 filter was developed to address solid (non-oil) particulates. The P2-02 filter, however, is effective against oil-based particulates in addition to solid (non-oil) particulates in accordance with the EN143:2021 standard.

Efficiency

The P2-02 filter offers improved efficiency compared to the original TR2 filter. The original TR2 filter achieves a 97% efficiency against solid particulates. The P2-02 filter features a new bonding and pleat design and tests ≥99% filtration efficiency for the sodium chloride penetration challenge for both single and multiple shift use. The P2-02 also has a >97% efficiency for the paraffin oil test and a >95% efficiency when retested after 24 hrs following the initial oil penetration challenge. As a result of the high-performance levels against these challenges, the P2-02 is certified for multiple shift use (i.e. not restricted to single-use like other products in market).

EN143:2021 has three classifications which describe the minimum filtration efficiencies required:

Based on these thresholds, the P2-02 was granted P2 classification despite performing well above the 94% minimum requirement.

Breathability

The P2-02 filter offers an approximately 15% improved (lower) inhalation resistance compared to the original TR2 filter. The original TR2 filter has an average inhalation resistance of 1.65 hPa (16.8 mmH2O) @ 85 LPM, while the P2-02 has an average inhalation resistance of 1.4 hPa (14.3 mmH2O) @ 95 LPM.

The design of the Gen1 TR2 and filter were improved in order to meet the requirements for CE standards in three specific test areas. These changes represent the primary differences between the Gen1 TR and Filter and the CE-Certified TR2 (with P2-02 filter):

New Exhalation Valve

In order to meet the requirements laid out in the EN-140:1998 standard, a new exhalation valve was introduced into the respirator design. The new design offers more consistent performance across the range of breathing rates and pressures.

New Small Head Harness

Version – In order to support a wider size range of users, an additional smaller head harness size option was added. With the original standard harness size, users with smaller head and/or neck sizes may end up with undesirable loops of leftover adjustment strap material forming on the cheeks. There are now two sizes for users to choose from: TR2 (Standard Head Harness) and TR2 (Small Head Harness).

New Filter

The filter also underwent design changes to increase filtration efficiency. The EN143:2021 standard requires testing against salt (NaCl) and also paraffin oil.  The new filter, named P2-02, has a new bonding and pleat design and tests to ≥99% filtration efficiency for the salt challenge for both single and multiple shift use. The P2-02 also demonstrated a >97% efficiency for the paraffin oil test and a >95% efficiency during the single use and multiple shift use challenges, respectively. The filter was awarded a P2 classification in EN143:2021 which mandates a minimum of 94% filtration efficiency for both oil and salt in all test conditions.

Yes, the P2-02 filter is approved for multiple shift use. In order to be certified for use in more than asingle shift, filters are required to be tested against both salt (NaCl) and paraffin oil, stored for 24 hours, and then retested with the same challenge.

The P2-02 filter demonstrates a >99% efficiency against salt in both rounds of testing. For the paraffin oil challenge, the P2-02 demonstrates >97% efficiency in single-use testing followed by >95% efficiency when retested after 24 hrs following the initial oil penetration challenge.

Useful life of any filter depends heavily on environmental and usage conditions. For example, filters used in less contaminated environments may offer longer service life than those used in heavily contaminated environments.

Excessive breathing resistance when inhaling indicates that the cartridge has served its useful life. Leave the contaminated area and replace the filter cartridge immediately. Cartridges should also be replaced when physically damaged or visibly soiled.

The CE-Certified P2-02 filter cartridge is compatible with both the CE-Certified TR2 as well as the uncertified Gen1 TR2. However, it is important to note that using the P2-02 filter with the Gen1 TR2 does not convert the respirator into a certified system; the facepiece of the respirator is required to hold its own certification to the EN140:1998 standard. The CE-Certified TR2 meets the requirements of this standard.

The body of the CE-Certified TR2 is labelled with a sticker which displays the CE Mark.

The P2-02 filter cartridge housing is also labelled with a sticker which displays the CE Mark.
